Fitness Instructor

A yacht fitness instructor runs the guest gym and the training around it: early beach runs, circuits on the sundeck, stretching after a day on the water toys. It is a job for qualified instructors who can coach anyone from a teenager to a grandparent, and who are happy to do crew work when there are no guests aboard.

The jobWhat fills the day

The core of the job is guest training. You run one-to-one sessions, small group classes and outdoor workouts, and you plan them around the itinerary, the weather and how late the guests went to bed. You look after the gym itself: cleaning, kit checks, ordering parts for a broken treadmill in a port with no supplier. You keep simple notes on each guest's injuries, preferences and goals so the next session follows on from the last one.

With guests aboard, your hours depend on theirs. One owner might want a 06:30 session every day. A charter group might book nothing for three days, then ask for a beach bootcamp for twelve. Between trips you work wherever the yacht needs you, usually in the interior, sometimes on deck or helping with watersports. On 60-80m yachts the job is nearly always paired with stew duties. Only on 100m+ will you find a full-time fitness post inside a dedicated spa team.

Captains and spa managers hire people with real land experience: two or more years in a gym, studio or hotel, and a recognised qualification. A second discipline helps a lot. Yoga, Pilates, massage or a dive ticket makes you more useful and easier to place. Calm manners matter as much as the coaching. You will be training very private people in a small space, and discretion is not optional.

Most instructors move up by adding qualifications and getting their first season of good references. Personal trainer posts pay more and suit those who can design full programmes and handle nutrition and rehab conversations. From there, some move into spa manager roles on large yachts, taking on budgets, rotas and guest wellness programmes. Others build a name with one owner and follow that family from yacht to villa as a private trainer.

Questions crew ask

Do I need yacht experience to get a fitness instructor job?

No, but you need solid land experience and a recognised qualification. Many people get their first job on a yacht through a dual stew and fitness post, which shows the captain you can live and work aboard. Getting a full-time fitness post with no yacht experience is unusual.

What is the difference between a fitness instructor and a personal trainer on a yacht?

The fitness instructor runs classes, gym sessions and general activity for guests. The personal trainer usually holds a Level 3 or higher qualification and writes full individual programmes, often for the owner. The personal trainer post tends to pay more and to be permanent.

Will I only do fitness work?

Rarely. On most yachts under 100m you will help the interior team with housekeeping, laundry and service when guests are not training. Go in expecting it and you will be hired again.

Where are most of these jobs?

Most posts are on yachts of 80m and over, cruising the Mediterranean in summer and the Caribbean in winter. Antibes, Monaco, Palma and Fort Lauderdale are where most of the hiring happens.
