Sole Steward / Sole Stewardess

A sole stew is the whole interior department on one person's shoulders. On yachts of roughly 24 to 40 metres you plan, clean, serve, launder and order with nobody to hand jobs to. It suits people who already know their way around a guest trip and want responsibility early, plus a direct line to the captain.

The jobWhat fills the day

The job covers everything a three-person interior team does on a bigger yacht. You turn cabins, run breakfast, lunch and dinner service, keep the bar stocked, do all the laundry and ironing, clean the heads and keep the saloon in order. You also manage interior stores, flowers, guest preference sheets and the interior inventory. On many boats you help the chef plate up, take lines when docking and drive the tender for a short run ashore.

With guests aboard, the days are long and you set your own rhythm. A good sole stew does the laundry in the gaps between meals, turns cabins while guests are ashore and has the table laid before anyone asks. Without guests, the work shifts to deep cleaning, detailing, polishing, stock checks and planning menus with the chef. On a 26m charter boat you may share a cabin with the chef. On a 38m private yacht the owner may treat you as the person who runs the house.

Captains want someone who has done at least one full season, usually as a stew on a bigger yacht, and can show they work cleanly without supervision. Silver service, wine knowledge and good laundry skills count for a lot. So does temperament. You are the guests' main contact for the whole trip, and on a small crew there is nowhere to hide a bad mood. Dual skills such as massage, cooking or a dive ticket make you easier to place.

A year or two as a sole stew teaches you budgeting, ordering and talking to an owner directly. Those are the skills chief stews need. The usual next step is second stew on a 50m to 60m yacht, where you learn to manage people, then chief stew. Some stay in sole roles because they like the independence and the charter tips. Others move into combined roles such as steward/purser or steward/chef.

On a busy charter boat the tip is usually split evenly among a small crew, so a sole stew can add USD 1,500 to 3,000 a week in a good Caribbean or Mediterranean season. Private yachts pay steadier salaries with fewer tips, and permanent roles normally include 30 to 45 days' leave. See the Stewardess & Interior Crew salary guide for figures from live adverts.

Questions crew ask

Can I get a sole stew job as my first yacht job?

It happens, mostly on smaller private boats, but it is hard. Captains want proof you can handle a full guest trip alone, and a season as stew on a bigger yacht gives you that. Strong hotel or private household experience can help you skip that season.

Is a sole stew role a step up or a step down from second stew?

It is a sideways move. As a sole stew you run your own department and get used to talking to owners and guests directly. A second stew learns to manage other crew, and you will need that before you can be a chief stew on a larger yacht.

How many hours does a sole stew work on charter?

Expect 14 to 16 hour days with guests aboard, broken by short rests when guests are ashore. Between charters the hours return to a normal day of about 08:00 to 17:00. Rest hours rules still apply, and a good captain plans the itinerary to give you time off.

What extra skills help me get hired?

Massage, beauty, cooking, a dive ticket or a powerboat licence all help on a small crew where everyone covers more than one job. Good laundry and flower arranging skills are noticed quickly too. List them clearly on your CV.
