Welcome to Wajer
Design above functionality. That's where engineering begins at Wajer. An inspection hatch disappears behind a cabinet and a keyhole is only visible when you need it. Design is leading and technology adapts to it. Because we build in series, every solution carries over to the next yachts.
Wajer designs and builds these yachts in Friesland: more than 60 per year, from the Wajer 38 to the 77. Our first yacht of over 100 ft is in production and we are already working on the next generation of models. Since 2020, our turnover has tripled. Through our own hubs from Miami to Southern France, we take care of owners worldwide, fully in line with our motto "Without a worry".
CEO Dries Wajer values an informal atmosphere and sets high standards for quality and innovation. In engineering you notice that in short lines of communication.
A colleague has moved internally to Production Line Engineering. At the same time, we are bringing engineering work back in-house that we sometimes outsourced before, and starting new projects, such as a completely new model. That's why we are now looking for a new Engineer.
Your work
A new design goes through three teams at Wajer. Design Engineering determines the lines and appearance of the yacht. Production Line Engineering creates the detailed drawings and part lists at the end, which the shipyard builds from. You sit right in between, in Project Engineering: the team where Project Engineers and Engineers turn a design into something that can actually be built.
On each project you work together with a Project Engineer and take on a defined part yourself.
- You develop components, constructions and installations so that production and procurement can proceed with them.
- You calculate through, make the 2D and 3D drawings, schematic diagrams and schematics, and ensure that everything fits within CE and MCA certification.
- For composite components, you create lamination drawings, develop information for the moulds and supervise the mould construction.
- Before a drawing goes to the shop floor, you check with production, procurement and suppliers whether it can actually be made that way.
A Project Engineer does largely the same work as you and coordinates additionally. Over time, you can grow into that role, with your own projects and engineers working with you.
Example from your work
For a new model you draw a composite component with a clean, continuous edge. With your first draft, the mould builder sees an undercut: the component won't come out of one mould. And design wants the line exactly that way.
You put two solutions side by side. With a separable mould, the shape remains intact, but you have a seam that you have to finish on each component. With a larger draft angle, the mould stays simple, but the line changes. In the 3D model you show design how much that line shifts. With the Project Engineer you look at what a parting line does to the construction, and with production how much additional finishing that is per component. The latter weighs heavily, because we build this component in series. Because the first component must be right immediately, you document the choice in the model and the lamination drawing before the mould is built.
Your sphere of activity
The engineering team of Manager Engineering Gerben Boerstra, part of Design & Development, currently consists of three Project Engineers and three Engineers, alongside three design engineers.
You work on new models in the open day boat segment and on specials. You coordinate which projects you work on with the Manager Engineering, and this can vary per period.
Who you are
- You draw precisely, calculate through your choices and don't shy away from conversations with production or a supplier.
To prevent you from applying for nothing: we are looking for someone with at least two years of experience as an engineer in yacht building or a related industry, who speaks excellent Dutch and wants to be on site at least three days per week. Your base is Lemmer; in certain phases of a project you work a few days per week in Heeg.
- You preferably have an hbo education in mechanical engineering, shipbuilding or a comparable field. If you have mbo-4 and are already working at hbo level, you are also welcome.
- You work smoothly with 2D and 3D drawing software.
- Knowledge of composites is a plus. This knowledge currently sits mostly with one colleague.
- You have an affinity for watersports and yacht building.
What you get from us
- What you draw, you see built in Lemmer and Heeg.
- Friday at 15.15 o'clock weekend.
- 27 vacation days and 6.5 ADV days.
- Cao Metalektro and pension accrual at PME.
- A travel allowance of €0.25 net per kilometre.
- Support and full reimbursement for obtaining your boating licences (KVB 1 and 2).
- Training via the Wajer Academy.
