Project Engineer interieur en exterieur

Lemmer, NLtoday

Welcome to Wajer

Design above functionality. That's where engineering at Wajer begins. An inspection hatch disappears behind a cabinet and a keyhole is only visible when you need it. Design is leading and engineering adapts to it. Because we build in series, every solution carries over to the next yachts.

Wajer designs and builds yachts in Friesland: over 60 annually, from the Wajer 38 to the 77. Our first yacht of over 100 ft is in production and we're already working on the next generation models. Since 2020 our turnover has tripled. From our own hubs from Miami to the South of France we take care of owners worldwide, fully in line with our motto "Without a worry".

CEO Dries Wajer favours an informal atmosphere and demands high standards in quality and innovation. In engineering you notice that through short lines of communication.

We are looking for two Project Engineers because we are bringing engineering work back in-house that we sometimes outsourced before. At the same time, new projects are starting: specials for the yacht of over 100 ft and a completely new model that is now launching. Our design engineers are still doing some of the detailed work themselves. With you on board, they can focus on design again.

Your work

A new design at Wajer goes through three teams. Design Engineering determines the lines and appearance of the yacht. Production Line Engineering makes the detailed drawings and parts lists at the end with which the shipyard builds. You sit right in between, at Project Engineering: the team where Project Engineers and Engineers turn a design into something that can actually be built.

You lead your own projects in the field of interior, outdoor furniture and deck items. Sometimes that's a smaller special, sometimes a project that runs longer than a year, and you work together with one or more engineers. You engineer yourself, divide the work and coordinate progress with Manager Engineering Gerben Boerstra. Design questions you discuss directly with Ronald van Hulst, director Design & Development.

A customer-specific cabin layout, an outdoor bench without visible fastening or hidden keyholes: you create a structure in which material, connections and finish hold the design together. You fix fasteners and inserts in time in the laminate build-up, and you make the weight calculation per component. You develop everything in 3D models, overviews, principle and working drawings and diagrams, and you ensure it fits within CE and MCA certification. Custom cabinets and other furniture that a supplier makes, you prepare and guide through handover.

The engineers on your project get their part from you. You review their drawings and ensure the parts connect to each other. Beforehand you weigh in on how it will be assembled and whether you can access it later, and on the shipyard you check whether it turned out as you drew it.

An example from your work

For a new model, design draws a bench on the aft deck without visible fastening. In the 3D model you see that the bolts through the deck are only accessible via a hatch underneath, and design doesn't want that hatch.

Because the first build number must be right immediately, you solve it before anything is built. You work out two directions. With laminated inserts the hatch is unnecessary, but their position must be fixed before production laminates the deck, and a later change to the bench becomes difficult. The through bolts can stay if the ceiling underneath gets a removable panel that fits in the ceiling layout. One engineer works out the inserts in the laminate build-up, you work on the panel variant. With production you run through the assembly sequence in the model and discuss assembly time, because the bench comes on every build number. You present both variants to design with dimensions.

Your playing field

The engineering team, part of Design & Development, currently consists of three Project Engineers and three Engineers, alongside three design engineers.

You work on new models in the open day boat segment and on specials. There is no fixed division per segment. Which projects you take on, you coordinate with the Manager Engineering, and this can shift if another project takes priority.

If you come from superyacht building, you work here at a different scale and choose the simplest construction that holds the design together.

Who you are

You are an experienced, all-round engineer with an eye for form and finish. You engineer yourself, can take a small team of engineers along and provide direction on content when engineers or suppliers propose different solutions. If you've mainly done interior work, outdoor furniture is a logical step: the same considerations about construction and finish, only the furniture stands outside.

To prevent you from applying for nothing: we are looking for someone who has already independently led projects or sub-projects as an engineer in yacht building or a related industry, speaks excellent Dutch and wants to work at least three days per week on site. Your base is Lemmer; in certain phases of a project you work a number of days per week in Heeg.

  • You work and think at hbo level, preferably with qualifications in mechanical engineering or marine technology.
  • You know the materials and construction methods of interior and furniture building. Experience with yacht interior, outdoor furniture or deck items is a plus.
  • You work smoothly with 3D design software. Rhinoceros 3D or SolidWorks is a plus.
  • You have an affinity with water sports and yacht building.

What you get from us

What you draw, you see built in Lemmer and Heeg. And as your projects become heavier, more engineers work with you.

  • Weekend starts at 15:15 on Friday.
  • 27 holiday days and 6.5 ADV days.
  • Metalektro collective labour agreement and pension build-up at PME.
  • A travel expense allowance of €0.25 net per kilometre.
  • Support and full reimbursement of obtaining your boating licenses (KVB 1 and 2).
  • Training via the Wajer Academy.
