Butler

A yacht butler looks after the owner and principal guests as individuals. You learn their routines, their wardrobe, their preferences at table, and you get things done before anyone asks. The job usually exists on private yachts over 60m, where owners expect the kind of service found in a well-run private house or a top hotel suite.

The jobWhat fills the day

The work is personal service. You unpack and repack for the owner, press and store clothes, clean shoes, lay out outfits for the evening and keep the master suite in perfect order. You serve meals and drinks, often as the principal's own server at table, and you manage their cabin stores, toiletries and preferred brands. You also keep detailed preference notes on everyone you look after, from how they take their coffee to which pillows they like. On a good yacht those notes travel with the guest from trip to trip.

With the owner aboard you work around their day. That means early starts, late finishes and staying close by without hovering. When the yacht is empty you catch up on wardrobe care, silver, crystal and inventory, and you help the wider interior team with detailing and training. On a 65m yacht the butler may also run service and housekeeping shifts as a senior stew. On 100m+ yachts the role is more defined, with butlers assigned to particular guests and a Head Butler setting standards.

Captains and chief stews look for people with real service backgrounds. Many come from five-star hotels, private households or butler schools. Others are experienced yacht stews who have spent several seasons on the service side and then completed formal butler training. Discretion matters more than anything. You will see and hear a great deal, and a single loose comment on social media can end a career. Calm manners, good English and neat presentation are expected. A second language such as French, Russian, Arabic or Mandarin helps on some programmes.

Most butlers move up within service. The next steps are Head Butler on a large yacht, Head of Service, or Chief Stew where you run the whole interior. Some go on to Interior Manager roles on 100m+ yachts. Others move ashore into private estate management, travelling with a family between their houses and the yacht. Time with one owner counts for a lot. Two or three years with a demanding principal and a strong reference will open more doors than a long list of short contracts.

Most butler roles are on private yachts, so charter tips are less common, though owners often give a generous end-of-season gratuity. Rotational contracts of 2:2 or 3:1 on the largest yachts mean paid leave but sometimes a lower monthly rate. See the Stewardess & Interior Crew salary guide for figures from live adverts.

Questions crew ask

Can I join a yacht as a butler with no yachting experience?

Yes, if you come from a five-star hotel, a private household or a recognised butler school. You will still need STCW Basic Safety, an ENG1 and usually PDSD. Expect to learn the yacht side, such as safety drills and working at sea, on the job.

What is the difference between a butler and a stew?

A stew covers service, housekeeping and laundry across the whole interior. A butler focuses on looking after particular people, especially the owner, and takes care of their wardrobe, table and routine. On smaller yachts the two roles overlap a lot.

Do butler jobs go to men or women?

Both. Butler is used as a job title regardless of gender, and many yachts hire female butlers. Owners and captains care about service standards, discretion and how well you fit with the family.

Is butler training worth paying for?

For an experienced stew moving into the role it often makes the difference, because captains like to see formal training in valeting, wardrobe care and household service. Choose a course with a good reputation in yachting or private service, and expect a few weeks of full-time study.
