Chase Boat Captain
A chase boat captain runs the fast day boat that follows a large yacht. You move guests ashore and back, carry the toys, run beach set-ups and pick up shopping. On busy charters you may cover more water than the mothership does. You hold command of your own small vessel and answer to the captain of a much bigger one.
The jobWhat fills the day
The job is boat handling, logistics and upkeep. You plan each run with the mothership's bridge, brief guests on safety, and put them on a beach, a restaurant quay or an airport pontoon on time. Between runs you wash down, refuel, check the engines and log hours. Most chase boats are 15-25m with twin diesels or waterjets, capable of 35 knots or more. You keep that machinery healthy yourself, because there is usually no engineer on board.
With guests aboard, you work around them. Their lunch ashore sets your timetable, and plans shift at short notice when the weather turns or the principal wants to go somewhere new. Without guests, you run errands, collect crew, move provisions and take the boat for service. On a 60m yacht the chase boat might be a large tender with a part-time captain. On a 120m yacht it is a proper vessel with its own crew, its own flag paperwork and its own berth.
Owners and captains hire people who can be trusted alone with expensive boats and VIP guests. That means a commercially endorsed Yachtmaster Offshore at minimum, and Master 200gt for larger boats. They want strong close-quarters handling, solid diesel knowledge and a clean, discreet manner. Most candidates come up through deckhand and tender driving roles, often with watersports or dive experience. Former RIB or fast-ferry skippers also do well.
From here, two routes are common. Some move back aboard the mothership as second officer or chief officer and work towards an OOW 3000gt or Master 500gt. Others stay in fast boats and progress to shadow vessel or support vessel command, where the boats run to 40-70m and carry helicopters, submarines and dive centres. Either way, years spent as a chase boat captain show you can run a vessel, which counts for a lot later on.

Meeting on the mothership bridge with the chief officer. You get the guest plan, the wind forecast and the beach club booking for lunch.
Load paddleboards, the seabob and a beach set-up for the deck crew. Run them to a cove on Spargi and come back for guests.
Safety briefing, then eight guests across to the beach. Hold off the shore on standby with the radio on.
Lunch on board the chase boat while the guests eat ashore. You stay within sight of the beach.
Fast run to Porto Cervo with two guests for shopping. Moor stern-to in a tight marina, then wait for a call.
Return everyone to the mothership, then go back to recover the beach gear with the deckhands.
Refuel, freshwater rinse on the engines and jets, log the hours and report defects to the chief engineer.
Crew dinner on the mothership. You stay on call in case of a late restaurant run.
Pay by yacht sizeMonthly, before tips. Estimates. Bars share one scale.
Charter tips usually match the mothership crew's share, which can add 10-15% of the charter fee across a season. Permanent jobs on large yachts often come with rotation such as 3:1 or 2:1. See the Chief Officer, Mate & OOW salary guide for figures from live adverts.

Questions crew ask
Is a chase boat captain the same as a tender driver?
No. A tender driver runs the yacht's own tenders under the deck team. A chase boat captain is in command of a separate vessel, often flagged and coded on its own, and is responsible for its maintenance, paperwork and crew.
Which ticket do I actually need?
A commercially endorsed Yachtmaster Offshore covers most chase boats under 24m. For larger boats, or ones coded as small commercial vessels, owners usually ask for Master 200gt. AEC engineering tickets help because you will be your own engineer.
Do I live on the chase boat?
Usually you live aboard the mothership with the rest of the crew. On some programmes the chase boat travels on its own between ports, so you may sleep aboard it during repositioning trips.
Where are these jobs based?
Most are on large yachts doing summer programmes in the Mediterranean, around Sardinia, Corsica, the Côte d'Azur and Greece. In winter they move to the Caribbean, mainly St Barths and the BVI. Hiring is concentrated in Antibes, Monaco, Palma and Fort Lauderdale.
