Rotational Captain
A rotational captain commands a superyacht for half the year and hands it to another captain for the other half. During your on-period you are the Master, with all the legal and practical responsibility that carries. The job suits experienced captains who want a family life without stepping down a size. It only works if both captains run the yacht to the same standard.
The jobWhat fills the day
A rotational captain is the Master of the yacht for half the year. You carry the same legal responsibility as any captain: safe navigation, crew welfare, ISM and ISPS compliance, budgets and the owner relationship. You share the job with an opposite number. The two of you work an equal rotation, commonly two months on and two off, or ten weeks on and ten off, and hand the yacht over in a structured way every time. Continuity is the whole point. The owner and crew should notice no change when captains swap.
Rotation is standard on yachts of 70m and above and increasingly common from 50m, where owners want to keep good captains who would otherwise leave for family reasons. On a busy charter yacht your on-period may be back-to-back trips between Monaco and Sardinia, then an Atlantic crossing to St Maarten. On a private yacht it can mean weeks without guests while you run yard periods, class surveys and drills. The bigger the yacht, the more the role becomes management: heads of department, the management company, flag state and the owner's office.
Owners and managers hire captains who already have command time, usually two or more seasons as Master on a similar size yacht. A common route is stepping up from chief officer on the same yacht when the incumbent captain asks to go on rotation. What sells you is a clean record, long tenures and proof that you can share a yacht without ego. Recruiters will ask for references from previous opposite numbers. Mismatched standards between the two captains is the main reason rotations fail.
Many captains see rotation as the destination: a full or near-full salary with real time at home. From here people move to larger commands, fleet captain roles overseeing several yachts for one owner, or build captain on a new build at a Dutch or German yard. Others go shoreside into yacht management or become an owner's representative. Off-periods are your own time, but keep your courses, medical and CoC revalidation current so you are never the reason a handover is delayed.

Some yachts pay the full salary all year and others pay only for days aboard, so check which before comparing offers. Rotational salaries can sit slightly below a permanent captain's on the same yacht, offset by months of paid or unpaid leave. Questions crew ask
Is a rotational captain paid less than a permanent captain?
Often slightly less, though many large yachts now pay rotational captains the full rate. The bigger question is whether you are paid all year or only for days aboard. A full annual salary on equal rotation is the best package in yachting.
How do I get my first rotational command?
Most people get it by already holding command on a similar size yacht, or by being chief officer when the existing captain moves to rotation and wants a trusted opposite number. Long tenures and references from owners count for more than ticket level alone.
What if my opposite number runs the yacht differently?
This is the biggest risk in the job. Agree standing orders, crew standards and spending limits in writing, and keep handover notes thorough. If you still cannot agree, raise it with the management company early, before the crew start playing one captain off against the other.
Will I be contacted during my time off?
Occasionally, for owner questions or crew matters only you know about. Good rotations keep this to a minimum through clear handovers. Expect to stay reachable for genuine emergencies and to read a short update before you rejoin.
