Jet Ski Instructor
A jet ski instructor looks after the personal watercraft on board and the guests who ride them. You brief and teach riders, follow them on the water and keep everyone clear of swimmers, tenders and local rules. On most yachts it is a deck job with an extra qualification. On the biggest charter yachts it can be a dedicated watersports post.
The jobWhat fills the day
The work splits in two. With guests on board, you run the jet skis: launching them from the garage or crane, giving safety briefings, teaching first-time riders, then shadowing them in a tender or on a second ski. You set the riding area, watch for swimmers and divers, and bring people back before they drift into restricted zones. Without guests, you are a deckhand who owns the toys: flushing engines after every use, checking impellers and batteries, logging hours and sending units off for servicing.
Yacht size changes the job. On a 45m yacht you are a deckhand who happens to hold the RYA PWC Instructor ticket, and you will wash down, stand anchor watch and drive the tender as much as you teach. On an 80m charter yacht with six skis, Seabobs and eFoils, the watersports side can fill whole days. Owners with young families want patient teaching. Charter guests in Mykonos or the BVI want speed, photos and someone who keeps it safe without spoiling the fun.
Captains hire people who are calm with nervous beginners and firm with confident ones. A background in watersports centres, lifeguarding or rescue boat work counts for a lot. You need STCW Basic Safety, an ENG1 and RYA PWC Proficiency at minimum, and the instructor qualification makes you far more useful. Mechanical sense matters, because a ski that will not start in Bonifacio cannot be sent back to a dealer that afternoon. Clean visas and a tidy, guest-facing manner complete the picture.
Most people use the role as a step on the deck ladder. Add Powerboat Level 2, Advanced Powerboat and a dive ticket and you become the go-to toys person, which leads to senior deckhand and then bosun. Others stay specialist, moving to full watersports instructor posts on 100m+ yachts, or working summers on yachts and winters at resorts. If you want the bridge, start sea time logging early and work towards Yachtmaster Offshore and the OOW 3000gt.

Look at the forecast and the park rules for the anchorage, then agree a riding area with the bosun and the captain.
Launch two skis. Brief a family of four on hand signals, speed limits near the beach and what to do after a fall.
Ride out with the two teenagers for a guided loop, then follow the parents in the tender while they practise turns.
Crew lunch in the mess while guests eat on the aft deck.
Afternoon session for the adult guests, plus a Seabob run off the stern for the younger children with a second crew member in the water.
Recover the skis, flush engines with fresh water, rinse and dry, and log hours ahead of the next service.
Dinner and downtime before an anchor watch later in the evening.
Two-hour anchor watch on the bridge, checking position, weather and the tender on the boom.
Pay by yacht sizeMonthly, before tips. Estimates. Bars share one scale.
Charter tips, often 10-20% of the charter fee split across the crew, can add several thousand dollars a month in a busy season. Seasonal posts usually come without paid leave, while permanent deck roles offer annual leave or rotation. See the Bosun & Deckhand salary guide for figures from live adverts.

Questions crew ask
Is jet ski instructor a full-time job on a yacht?
Usually it is part of a deckhand role. Only large charter yachts, typically 80m and above, hire someone whose main job is watersports, and even then you will help with deck work on quiet days.
Which qualification do captains look for?
The RYA PWC Instructor certificate is the standard, built on RYA PWC Proficiency. Some flag states and local authorities have their own rules on who may hire out or supervise jet skis, so the captain will check what applies in each cruising ground.
Do I need to fix jet skis myself?
You need to handle daily care: flushing, cleaning, battery checks, basic fault-finding and spotting wear before it becomes a breakdown. Major servicing goes to the engineer or a dealer, but a manufacturer maintenance course makes your CV stronger.
Where are most of these jobs?
Hiring peaks in Antibes and Palma from March to May for the Med season, and in Fort Lauderdale in autumn for the Caribbean and Bahamas winter. Charter yachts with big toy inventories hire for the role far more often than private yachts.
